Our Purpose

Our purpose is to ensure the preservation, development and knowledge sharing of skills, techniques, and practices in the art of Fly Dressing in the North West of England. (We also set out to help our members ultimately Catch More Fish!) We achieve this through regular monthly branch meetings where members and guests can view, take part in or discuss many aspects of fly tying. We cover tools and equipment, materials and components, detailed techniques and step by step demonstrations of fly patterns both old and new. We also attend national fly tying events and country fairs to promote the art and provide support. Our demonstration evenings take place with camera and TV set up to ensure the detail is available to all present. We have an online presence including branch website, Facebook page and YouTube video channel. The branch is underpinned with a committee who manage the day to day arrangements of the branch including finances, material matters and general up keep.

About Our Branch

Formed over 50 years ago in South Manchester, our Branch is one of almost 40 across the UK that are affiliated to The Fly Dressers’ Guild. In order to be a member of our branch you also therefore need to become a member of the Guild. The Fly Dressers’ Guild sets out to promote and encourage the art of fly dressing or fly tying. It is a not-for-profit organisation that is open to anyone interested in fly tying, whether a knowledgeable veteran, a novice or somewhere in between and new members are warmly welcomed. Our Branch sets out to provide that promotion and encouragement locally in the North West of England. To visit the Fly Dressers’ Guild web site click on the logo to the left.

Fly Tying Evenings

The North West Branch now meets at the Timperley Village Club, WA15 7UT. We have an all year round monthly program of talks and demonstrations from guest speakers along with fly tying evenings where you can get help from the more experienced members. We also arrange fishing days out including friendly competitions with other branches. As a branch we also provide exhibition at various Game Fairs and Country Shows in support of the Fly Dressers’ Guild.

Guest Speakers

Our guest speakers give specialist demonstrations and advice, some bring opportunity to purchase items. Famous names have conducted presentations for the branch such as Charles Jardine, Paul Little, Don Stazicker, Karl Humphries MBE, Barry Ord Clarke, Stuart Crofts and Robert Smith. We have had corporate evenings with likes of Phil Holding (Fly Tying Boutique) and Steve Cooper (Cookshill Fly Tying) and recently from Semperfli.

Tying Evenings

At our tying evenings our resident instructors demonstrate the tying of selected patterns allowing members to follow along step by step, getting assitance if required. These sessions are relaxed and informal. We have a broad range of experience within the branch to call on for these sessions.

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Timperly Village Club. The program for these meetings is published on the ‘Calendar‘ page. We also arrange monthly fishing trips to stillwaters/reservoirs during the season. The program varies each year, both the tying and fishing activities are selected from requests and suggestions made by the members.
